SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — If you get a letter in coming days from the Illinois Department of Revenue, it may be because you have money waiting for you.
IDOR has launched an initiative to increase participation in the Earned Income Credit.
The bureau has identified 22,000 taxpayers who qualify for the credit but have not claimed it.
The EIC is worth up to 18% of a taxpayer’s federal claim, and a household qualifies for the credit if it earns under $55,952 per year.
For some Illinois taxpayers, that’s worth up to $1,157.
“So, what we’re going to do is, we’re going to e-mail each of those households with very clear instructions about what they can do, and hopefully they pick up their credit,” said Sam Salustro, IDOR Spokesperson.
“This is a tool that puts back hundreds and thousands of dollars in tax credits back in families’ pockets, directly.”
IDOR estimated a combined $10 million has gone unclaimed.
IDOR encouraged taxpayers who earn under $55,952 and don’t receive a letter to reach out to the bureau.
