MORTON, Ill. — The region, state and nation have all been seeing an increase in COVID-19 cases lately, and Morton District 709 is no different.
22 students in the district have tested positive for COVID-19, which is up from just two last week. In addition, 239 students were in quarantine and remote learning compared to 19 last week, according to Superintendent Jeffrey Hill.
Cases at Morton schools are in two buildings: Lettie Brown Elementary School and Morton High School. Those two alone account for all of the cases and three-fourths of the students in quarantine.
Hill says many of those students will return to class in-person by Nov. 9.
“It has always been our presumption that these numbers would fluctuate, but the latest figures come against the backdrop of a spike in COVID cases at the community, county, regional and statewide levels,” said Hill.
“Still, our rates of infection — now at .77% — by and large have remained below the outside world.”
This week staff members in quarantine also jumped, going from zero to 11.
