PEORIA, Ill. — Peoria attorney Steve Kouri has announced he wants to represent the Fourth District on the City Council.
Kouri filed petitions on Monday for the February primary.
Current 4th District Councilman Jim Montelongo will not be seeking re-election and is running for mayor.
Kouri is a member of the Peoria Liquor Commission and has also served on the Peoria Zoning Board of Appeals.
In announcing his candidacy, Kouri says public safety should be one of the city’s top priorities.
“We also need to reduce taxes and regulations to help stimulate the local economy. Selective incentives should be developed to attract new businesses and industries to Peoria and the area,” Kouri said in a release.
Kouri added, “We must create a diverse community with more opportunity for minorities, including people with disabilities.”
Kouri, who was born with cerebral palsy, helped collect signers of his petitions by going door-to-door in a wheelchair.
“The response to my candidacy has been amazingly supportive,” Kouri said.
