PEORIA, Ill. — Peoria firefighters responded to reports of a carbon monoxide alarm activation at the Shell gas station on Sterling Thursday morning just after 11:00 a.m.
Upon arrival, fire crews realized the alarm was carbon dioxide instead of monoxide.
According to Battalion Chief Rick Morgan, the crew equipped their self-contained breaking apparatus due to the hazards of carbon dioxide in the store.
Fire crews shut down the carbon dioxide tank on the outside of the Shell that supplies fountain drinks.
Peoria firefighters remained on scene for an extended period of time to ventilate the gas station.
Once the atmosphere was no longer deemed hazardous, the building was turned back over to the store manager, according to Morgan.
Morgan says it is unknown at this time whether or not the leak has been resolved.
