PEORIA, Ill. — UnityPoint Health in Peoria began administering the COVID-19 vaccine Wednesday as hospitals around the country start receiving and giving their first doses to front-line health care workers.
Charge Nurse Jessica Selph, who received the vaccine Thursday, said she was glad to help out.
“It feels great to finally have a vaccine here,” said Selph. “I’m really excited to help with immunity across the community to protect our staff and keep nurses at the bedside taking care of patients.”
Selph said she had no hesitation in receiving the vaccine and was glad to receive the first dose.
Dr. Pooja Gupta held a similar sentiment upon receiving her first dose as well.
“I believe and trust what the scientists have done,” said Gupta. “This is unprecedented, and I totally believe in this.”
While Gupta said it was an emotional feeling finally receiving a vaccine for the pandemic, which has killed more than 300,000 Americans, she is hopeful as they continue to fight against the virus.
“It’s been ten months of continuous fighting,” she said. “We’re feeling optimistic but obviously continuing our fight towards this horrible pandemic that we’re all facing.”
UnityPoint Health plans to give 500 front-line workers their first dose by the end of this week with more doses expected to arrive early next week.
