PEORIA, Ill. — The resident of a home at 5622 N. Fountaindale Dr. was hospitalized due to smoke inhalation after a Monday evening fire.
Peoria Firefighters responded just before 5:30 p.m. on reports of a kitchen fire at the home, where they found heavy smoke coming from the front door with no visible flames.
According to Battalion Chief Steve Rada, the owner of the home was evacuating the home as they were arriving on scene.
The owner told firefighters that her stove was on fire which she extinguished with water.
Firefighters went into the residence and found significant fire damage to the stove and upper cabinets as well as heavy smoke damage throughout the home.
Peoria Fire Department Paramedics rendered aid to the owner of the home before transporting her to a hospital.
The fire appears to be accidental at this time, according to Rada.
“It sounds like, at this time, that there was a cardboard box left on the stove that accidentally turned the burner on,” said Rada.
He also added it’s better to get out of a fire instead of trying to put it out yourself.
“This time they were able to put the fire out, but there’s been several instances in the past where they were unsuccessful,” he said. “Priority one for us is life stabilization — after that we’ll go in and save all your property.”
