CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. — President Joe Biden made his first trip to Illinois as president Wednesday to discuss the $1.8 trillion American Families Plan.
The American Families Plan is a proposal by Biden that significantly increases spending in areas such as childcare, paid-leave, preschool, community college, and healthcare.
The spending would be paid for with increases in taxes on high-income Americans.
During his visit to Crystal Lake, Biden discussed what the legislation would mean for children and education.
“I want to guarantee an additional four years of public education to every person in America starting with providing two years of universal, high-quality preschool for three and four year olds,” said Biden.
The President also said he wants to provide two free years of community college.
Biden continued on to discuss student debt, particularly for future educators.
“My plan will reduce student debt for future teachers, double the size of federal annual scholarships to future teachers, and will also support $100 billion in-school infrastructure improvements,” said Biden.
According to the Biden Administration, no one making less than $400,000 per year will see their taxes increase.
Republican lawmakers have pushed back on plans to raise the capital gains tax from 20% to 39.6% for those earning more than $1 million per year.
