SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Illinois Governor JB Pritzker says he’s signed the new legislative maps into law that the General Assembly approved during the summer.
In a news release Friday, Pritzker — who didn’t hold any sort of signing ceremony — said, “These legislative maps align with the landmark Voting Rights Act and will help ensure Illinois’ diversity is reflected in the halls of government.”
Democrats claimed the redistricting process was bipartisan and had plenty of public input. But Republicans say the process was anything but.
Back in August, State Senator Win Stoller said the whole process was a “sham,” and that hearings on the proposals were rushed and done on short notice.
“By passing these maps today, in the manner that they did, the majority has shown that maintaining power at all costs is the only thing that truly matters,” said Stoller, in a statement August 31. “They have shown that they will do whatever it takes to keep their power even if it means they have to disregard the voting rights of the people they are meant to serve.”
