PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria Police now believe Monday evening’s accident where a SUV and a Peoria Public School bus with children inside collided was likely caused by drag racing.
That’s what police say their Traffic Unit determined. They say during the investigation into the crash at Jefferson and Bryan, evidence was collected including a red Camaro that was seen racing the SUV.
The driver of the Camaro, Maurice Young, 21, and an unidentified juvenile driver of the SUV face charges of Speeding more than 35 miles per hour over the limit, No Driver’s License, and Street Racing.
Young also was wanted on Peoria and Tazewell County warrants.
The juvenile also faces charges of Driving Under the Influence of Drugs, Illegal Transportation of Cannabis, Not Wearing a Seatbelt, and Reckless Driving.
The case is being reviewed by the Peoria County State’s Attorney.
Four people in the SUV suffered serious injuries and were hospitalized, while several students on the bus suffered minor injuries.
