PEORIA, Ill. – If you think the ongoing supply chain issues and the economy are causing you troubles getting groceries and other supplies, try running a food bank.
Local food banks say they’re experiencing supply shortages as well. Monica Scheurer, Director of the Midwest Food Bank, tells news partner 25 News all those problems are magnified for a non-profit like hers.
“We haven’t seen as many donations come in because of the cost of food,” said Scheurer. “Our food cost has gone up as well. When we’re buying food by the pallet-full, by the case-full, by the truck-full, it’s costing us more” said Monica Scheuer, Director of the Mid-West Food Bank.
Scheurer says the end of the growing season also means less donations of produce coming in for local farmers.
Wayne Cannon is the manager of the Peoria-Area Food Bank, and tells 25 News operations there haven’t been impacted too badly yet, except in a couple areas.
“The rising cost of fuel…to move food,” said Cannon. “We had two [job] openings here, and it took us almost three months to fill.”
Local food bank officials say they’re also not seeing as many donations of produce from farmers due to the end of the growing season, and they’re not seeing as many monetary donations as well.
