PEORIA, Ill. — A world premiere in Peoria.
“Everywoman: A Friedan Centennial Memoire, written by the Peoria Symphony Orchestra’s Composer-In-Residence Stephanie Ann Boyd, will debut later this month.
The composition was written in honor of Peoria’s world-famous feminist Betty Friedan.
Boyd told WMBD’s “The Greg and Dan Show” how Friedan’s “The Feminine Mystique” and other writings inspired the piece.
“I know that she got to be quite a tough cookie later in her life. And, so you see that in the music…that’s more aggressive and feisty and fun…more of that gravitas,” Boyd said.
HerStory: A Musical Tribute to Betty Friedan, will be performed on Saturday, November 20 at the Peoria Civic Center Theater.
“Over the course of the 23 minutes of the piece, you really get good sense of her (Friedan) as a person, and her amazing accomplishments,” Boyd said.
The performance will be narrated by Deborah Rutter, president of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., and feature comments by Peoria Mayor Rita Ali.
