GLASGOW, Scotland — Illinois Governor JB Pritzker says he’s continuing to advance the environmental interests of Illinois while in Scotland.
Pritzker Monday spoke during the United National Climate Conference in Glasgow, and said the state is a leader in climate action, after lawmakers passed what was called landmark legislation two months ago.
“It includes becoming the first Midwest state to target one hundred percent carbon-free energy by 2025, phasing out private coal by 2030, and all coal and natural gas by 2045,” said Pritzker.
Pritzker says the state’s climate plan represents all of Illinois, and even its economy.
“We’re fostering an energy sector that reflects the population that it serves,” said Pritzker, “with investments in workforce hubs, a path to prosperity for minority contractors, and Illinoisans living within minority justice communities.”
Experts say that means areas where the environment is likely causing health problems.
Pritzker says, though, the main focus of the state’s climate plan was job creation, and thinks other countries should look at similar concerns.
