PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood is confirming the family’s worst fears.
Troy Erving, 10, was pronounced dead Friday morning, following Tuesday evening’s hit-and-run accident on Northeast Glen Oak Avenue.
“In this particular case, and this is based on my experience, we’ll rule this death a homicide,” said Harwood. That would make Erving’s death the 31st homicide in Peoria this year.
The family said Thursday Erving had been declared brain dead. Harwood said other tests had to be performed before Erving could be pronounced legally dead.
“Right now, we’re working with [OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center] staff and the Gift of Hope, and working for organ donation,” said Harwood. “Once that organ donation is complete, we will have an autopsy done.”
Harwood expects that autopsy to be conducted as soon as Monday.
Karrie Brunswig, 43, was arrested Wednesday on traffic offenses, along with felony charges of Leaving the Scene of an Accident and Driving on a Suspended License. It’s not yet clear if any other charges will be filed.
