PEORIA, Ill. – Residents who live near a newly-approved short-term rental property in Chillicothe are likely not happy.
Fourty-two of them signed a petition urging the Peoria County Board deny the property a special use permit so that the home in Medina Township can operate as an “Airbnb.”
One of them is the property’s next-door neighbor, Joan Kisser.
“It seems the perception of a house being rented as an Airbnb is similar in use, and almost the same, as a single-family residence,” said Kisser. “No one buys a home in a residential neighborhood with the expectation that they will have absolutely no knowledge of who is living next to them.”
The board instead voted thirteen to three, with one abstention, in favor of the special use permit, but with restrictions.
“No more than eight…overnight guests will be present at the subject parcel at any one time,” said James Dillon, Peoria County Board Land Use Committee Chairperson. “Overnight accomodations may not be offered at the subject property until the certificate of occumancy is issued.”
That’s in addition to a fence being required to be built, no more than four cars parked on the property at one time, and some other restrictions.
Residents claim other properties in the area are also being used as Airbon’s illegally.
