PEORIA, Ill. – A slightly different route isn’t the only change being made to special events in Peoria this week after Sunday’s tragedy in Waukesha, Wisconsin.
Peoria Police say for both the Chocolate Turkey 5K Thursday, and the Santa Claus Parade on Friday, security will be ramped up.
“We want everyone to feel safe and have a memorable experience for some of our most popular annual holiday events,” Brad Dixon, Peoria Assistant Police Chief, said in a news release. “We have added some additional security precautions to compliment this year’s festivities.”
Police say there will be more police barriers and city vehicles blocking some streets and sidewalks downtown.
It was already announced that the Santa Claus parade, among other changes, won’t go down Jefferson or Liberty Streets this year.
Both Thursday and Friday, police say heavier than normal traffic flow can be expected between 9:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
