PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria police have arrested a suspect in connection with a Thanksgiving Day homicide.
Police spokesperson Simone Roth says Martarius McGee, 24, turned himself in at the Peoria Police Department Saturday. Following questioning, McGee was arrested on charges of first degree murder, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a weapon by a felon.
McGee was than transported to the Peoria County Jail.
McGee is suspected of fatally shooting of Matthew Smith, 18.
Officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert at 11:06 a.m. Thursday indicating five rounds fired in the 300 block of East Thrush Avenue. Additionally, police received several calls reporting a male victim who was shot.
Upon arrival, officers were told Smith was transported to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood reported Saturday autopsy results indicated Smith suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and most likely died instantly. The range of fire and the caliber of weapon used was not released.
Police say while there are no other suspects, the incident remains under investigation.
