PEORIA, Ill. — Residents of a high-rise senior living facility in Peoria had to be evacuated Friday after fire broke out in their building.
Emergency crews responded just before 4 p.m. Friday to the apartments at 215 W. Sam J. Stone Avenue, finding smoke in a unit on the ninth floor. The fire was located in the kitchen.
Crews had the out in a matter of minutes. A resident already had evacuated, but a cat was treated with oxygen and reunited with its owner.
Firefighters checked the building’s other floors for fire extension and ventilated smoke from the structure.
The fire was contained to a single unit. The resident was displaced due to smoke and fire damage.
A fire investigator said the cause of the fire was unintentional.
No injuries were reported.
