IRVINE, Cal. — The Rivian R1T has been named MotorTrend magazine’s truck of the year for 2022.
The all-electric pickup truck, made at Rivian’s plant in Normal, Illinois, has a range of more than 300 miles and a price tag starting just above $70,000.
Rivian’s other facilities are located in Palo Alto, California; Carson, California; Plymouth, Michigan; Vancouver, British Columbia, and Woking, England.
The R1T is the first truck not made by one of Detroit’s Big Three automakers to win the award since 2008.
MotorTrend staffers reportedly were impressed with the R1T’s design as well as its performance. The magazine’s writers also touted Rivian’s interior design and materials.
Finalists for MotorTrend’s top truck award also included GMC’s Hummer EV and Hyundai’s Santa Cruz.
Rivian’s R1T is the first commercially available electric vehicle with four motors, one to power each wheel, allowing greater off-road capabilities.
