PEORIA, Ill. – A surge in COVID-19 cases locally and across the nation has resulted in a schedule change for Peoria Public Schools.
The school district announced Sunday the current winter break will be extended through the week of Jan. 3-7 with students returning to school Monday, Jan. 10.
The extension of the winter break will allow for preparation for continued in person learning. The days will be made up at the end of the 2021-2022 school year.
Twelve-month staff will continue to report for work the week of Jan. 3-7, similar to the previous two weeks of the break. However, 10-month and 11-month staff will continue their winter break through Thursday, Jan. 6 and should report for work Friday, Jan. 7 for an Institute Day.
All scheduled high school athletics events will continue to be held this week, however, middle school athletics and activities will not be held this week.
Peoria Public Schools is also offering “peace of mind” COVID-19 testing for staff members from 10 a.m. until noon Tuesday, Jan. 4 and Thursday, Jan. 6 at the three high schools. If a staff member is exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms, they are advised to go to the Peoria Civic Center testing site or seek out a test from their primary care physician.
Free COVID-19 testing at the Peoria Civic Center has been expanded and will now be offered from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Peoria Public Schools students, staff and families are encouraged to consider using this week to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, if not done so already. The Peoria City/County Health Department is administering the vaccine from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. No appointments are necessary.
