SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — It’s been two years since Illinois announced its first case of COVID-19.
It happened on January 24, 2020. A Chicago woman who had recently returned from Wuhan, China, tested positive for the virus.
Two years later, the pandemic continues with record-setting numbers of new cases and hospitalizations this month.
Gov. J-B Pritzker said during his COVID-19 briefing last week, that while it looks like the most recent surge has peaked, the health care system remains overloaded with patients.
“The vast majority of Illinois COVID-19 hospitalizations are occurring among the unvaccinated. The most important thing you can do right now is to wear a mask when you’re inside and around others, to get vaccinated, and to get boosted,” Pritzker said.
Since the pandemic began, more than 2.8 million Illinoisans have tested positive for COVID-19 and over 30,000 have died.
