PEORIA, Ill. — Peoria City Council has signed off on an agreement to buy land in the Warehouse District for a new parking lot that leaders hope will spur growth.
“They will be singing in the Warehouse District tonight,” said Mayor Rita Ali.
The council Tuesday night approved agreements to buy old railroad property behind the 800 and 1000 blocks of Washington Street at $10.00 per square foot, or almost $1.7 million from current owner J.P. Riverfront, LLC.
News partner 25 News reports that no one was opposed to the deal.
“This is what’s going to open up the door for new development to occur in the Warehouse District and the expansion of the downtown area,” said at-large Council member Zachary Oyler.
“This is vital to the future of our riverfront, and the projects that we would like to see occur going forward,” Oyler said.
At-large Council member Sid Ruckriegel echoed Oyler’s sentiments.
“This really is a fulfillment of a promise that we’ve made to businesses, our citizens down in the area there to provide the amount of parking that we know we need,” said Ruckriegel.
“We’ve got some beautiful buildings down there. This will be a piece in the whole restoration,” Ruckriegel also said.
