PEORIA, Ill. — Monday, January 31 is International Zebra Day.
The goal of celebrating it is to help raise awareness about the zebra’s plight, so that they can be preserved and protected.
Peoria Park District Executive Director Emily Cahill says the holiday was founded by a consortium of conservation organizations, including the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and the Conservation Biology Institute.
Peoria Zoo will celebrate Zebra Day by offering special enrichment to the zebras during the day and providing self-guided activities inside the Tropics Classroom. Admission to the Zoo is also free in lieu of donations.
At Peoria Zoo, you can see the Grevy’s Zebras in the Africa! exhibit. This species of Zebra is of special concern for conservationists as it is listed as CITES appendix I, and is considered endangered by IUCN and threatened by USFWS. Peoria Zoo participates in the Association of Zoos and Aquarium’s Grevy’s Zebra Species Survival Plan.
