SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Three Illinois State Police troopers were hit while assisting other drivers on Wednesday as a snow storm gripped the region.
An ISP squad car was struck early Wednesday morning on I-72 near Illiopolis.
A release from the ISP said the trooper had pulled over to assist a stranded motorist who had slid off the roadway due to weather conditions. ISP says the patrol cruiser was “stationary with all of its emergency lights activated” at the time.
The trooper was taken to a hospital, but was released.
Crash investigators are calling it a Move Over law violation.
Another state trooper’s vehicle was part of a chain reaction crash in Sangamon County Wednesday afternoon when the trooper was trying assist drivers in another three vehicle crash that involved another ISP squad car.
That’s when the assisting trooper’s squad car was struck, sending the driver to a hospital.
The second crash was also investigated as a Move Over law situation, which requires drivers to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles and any vehicle with hazard lights on.
Failing to comply comes with a fine of $250 up to $10,000 dollars.
Drivers could also lose their license for at least six months if someone is injured.
