WASHINGTON, Ill. – Parents in one of Washington’s four school districts are not happy with their district’s decision to continue requiring everyone wear a mask, at least for now.
“I hate comparing my children’s school to a state funded institution,” said Jena Green, District 51 parent.
According to news partner 25 News, Green was one of a number of parents speaking out Monday about Washington Central District 51’s decision to continue to make masks required, while nearby District 52 made them optional.
Superintendent Dale Heidbreder says, he’s just trying to keep his legal tracks covered.
“We’re not named in the lawsuit; so, a [Temporary Restraining Order] only applies to those individuals named in the lawsuit,” said Heidbreder.
A Temporary Restraining Order was granted in the case that was before a Springfield judge on Friday.
Some of the parents who walked out of the meeting threatening their own lawsuit. Others said while some kids may be struggling, others are doing just fine.
“They come home happy. They’re still excelling in their classes,” said Mollenhauer. “When parents start to argue, I feel like it pushes down to the children and then children argue about it and that’s difficult to see.”
Heidbreder says for now, his district needs to stay status quo in an ever-changing situation.
“A decision could come or something could happen tomorrow and change the direction of things,” said Heidbreder.
