PEORIA, Ill. — Peoria Public School Board members have voted to change the annual school calendar, shortening summer break by nearly two weeks and lengthening both fall and spring break periods.
Following hours of public statements and lengthy discussion by board members, the vote came in at 4 to 3 in favor of the change Monday night.
During the meeting, Dr. Sharon Desmoulin-Kehrat continued to push in favor of the recommendation for a modified school year.
Just before the vote, District 3 member Annie Reinking said she likes the modified calendar concept, and she hopes it will be rolled out smoothly, but she ultimately couldn’t vote for it “because I feel like our community has spoken and the buy-in isn’t there.”
The Peoria Federation of Teachers indicated on Facebook, it plans to bargain on the impact of the schedule change.
