PEORIA, Ill. — The City of Peoria is reminding residents and businesses alike to clear snow off their sidewalks.
Sie Maroon, with Peoria Public Works, told WMBD’s “The Greg and Dan Show” Thursday morning that many sidewalks are still covered in snow following last week’s storm.
Violation of City Ordinance #17268 could lead to fines for commercial properties. Peoria residents, on the other hand, won’t be fined.
“But, we do ask that the residents shovel their snow, be a good neighbor basically. Helping people that have to walk through neighborhoods and walk through business corridors,” Maroon said.
Peoria businesses, as well as public and private schools, hospitals and churches, are required to provide a four-foot-wide path for wheelchairs and strollers adjacent to their property.
Noncompliance could result in fines anywhere from $50.00 to $100.00.
Businesses have 24 hours after the snow stops falling when accumulations are less than six inches and 36 hours to clear the snow when accumulations are six inches or more.
If another snow event happens, Maroon said, the clock is reset to the end of the most recent snowfall.
The City of Peoria may clear private property if it’s left snow-covered, but the cost will be paid by the owner.
Maroon reminds residents that they should not shovel snow into the street, which is against the law, because it can cause dangerous conditions for both motorists and pedestrians.
