PEORIA COUNTY, Ill. — Illinois State Police have released more details on a wrong-way crash in Peoria County Saturday.
According to an ISP release, the incident happened at 4:24 p.m. Saturday on State Route 24 eastbound at 1st Street near Mapleton.
A vehicle driven by 63-year-old Sheldon Williams, of Peoria, was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes when it struck another vehicle head-on.
A 72-year-old woman from Peoria, the passenger in Williams’ vehicle, was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
Williams and the other driver, 51-year-old Scott Meech, of Naperville, were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Route 24 was closed for about five hours for investigation, with traffic rerouted onto Wheeler Street.
Williams was charged with Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, Driving Wrong Way, Driving While License Revoked, and Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident.
The crash remains under investigation.
Additional charges are possible.

MAPLETON, Ill. – Route 24 in Mapleton was the scene of a head-on collision Saturday afternoon.
State Police say a vehicle was traveling west in the eastbound lanes of Route 24 at First Street at 4:24 p.m. when it collided head-on with an eastbound vehicle.
Three people were transported to a hospital with injuries, but their names and other information were not released.
Route 24 at First Street was closed for nearly five hours for the investigation with traffic rerouted to Wheeler Road.
