PEORIA, Ill. — Pavement collapses that have closed a portion of Mossville Road on The Hill in north Peoria are being blamed on wet weather, but they also occurred near a water main.
Twice in the past two weeks, crews have been forced to shut down a section of Mossville Road, significantly impacting east-west travel across north Peoria nearer to the river.
Terry Mackin with Illinois American Water says recent rains caused sizable voids to open up under the pavement near one of their water mains, leading to the threat of larger sink-holes or collapses in the road.
He says crews will begin the project by digging up the damaged pavement as well as areas nearby, back filling and re-compacting the soil underneath the pavement and then re-paving the area.
He says crews hope to have the work done by Friday, but weather could cause delays as there is rain in the forecast this week.
