EAST PEORIA, Ill. — There will soon be more than a dozen new license plate readers installed to help police curb crime in East Peoria.
City Council members gave their final approval during Tuesday night’s meeting.
One resident stood up in the meeting demanding police do more about an increase in thefts and other crime in his neighborhood.
Deputy Chief of Operations David Horn said the license plate readers will do the trick.
“Those placements are crucial, because as we get these complaints, they’re not a surveillance system, they’re reading the plates, they’re allowing us to be able to with descriptions or plates that the residents give, be able to catch these criminals,” Horn said.
At an earlier meeting, East Peoria Police Chief Rich Broderick said the license plate readers have already been — QUOTE — “extremely helpful” for police in neighboring Peoria and Bloomington-Normal.
