McLEAN COUNTY, Ill. — Southbound traffic on Interstate 55 south of Bloomington-Normal was diverted at exit 154 Friday afternoon as Illinois State Police responded to a five-vehicle crash.
ISP said the accident happened just before 4 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-55 near mile marker 151 in McLean County.
Firefighters treated multiple patients, some in critical condition, including several that needed extrication.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene, another was taken by Life Flight to a hospital where they died, and three people were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
ISP said the southbound lanes of I-55 were closed until after 12:30 a.m. Saturday for an investigation.

Two area hospitals were notified with trauma alerts and two Life Flight helicopters were called to the scene.
ISP said the southbound lanes of I-55 were closed for several hours for an investigation.
