PEORIA, Ill. – The Peoria Park District is officially kicking off its summer full of activities for children and adults, but not without some concerns.
The start of the park district’s “Summer of Go” coincides with the opening of the Gwynn Family Aquatic Center for the first time in two years.
But, the hours of operation may not be ideal for everyone.
“We have enough lifeguards to operate Gwynn Family Aquatic Center and Proctor Recreation Center pools weekday afternoons,” said Emily Cahill, Executive Director. “If you try to push us beyond that, we would not be able to meet those needs.”
Cahill says the district is always hiring more lifeguards in hopes hours could expand, and lifeguard training classes have no fees this month. Meanwhile, she says there are hundreds of family and kids activities available through the end of August, at low cost, so as to offset increasing gas prices.
“We have a whole slate of programming,” said Cahill. “We are going to have our second season of our Summer of Fun passes, which allows kids who are students at Peoria Public Schools, and students at private schools in 61603 and 61604, along with anyone who qualifies for a scholarship, or preschool kids who have participated in programming at the Park District in the past” to use park district facilities on a virtually unlimited basis.
