CHICAGO, Ill. — Jim Ryan, former Illinois Attorney General, passed away at home Sunday at the age of 76 after several lengthy illnesses, according to a statement from his family.
Ryan was Illinois Attorney General from 1995-2003, winning reelection in 1998. He also ran as the GOP nominee for Governor in 2002 against Rod Blagojevich.
Before becoming Attorney General, Ryan served 10 years as DuPage County State’s Attorney.
Governor JB Pritzker posted a message to Facebook following the announcement of Ryan’s passing, saying:
“The news that former Attorney General Jim Ryan has passed is a sad day for Illinois. MK and I offer our deepest condolences to his wife, Marie, and all of his children and loved ones. Jim was a tireless advocate for the people of Illinois, and his legacy will endure long past his life, particularly with the landmark tobacco settlement. But Jim’s most memorable qualities will forever be his integrity and the way he carried himself and his family through devastating personal tragedy with grace and compassion. He was an example for us all, and may his memory be a blessing.”
Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul issued his own statement, saying:
“Jim Ryan will forever be known for his strength and dedication to service on behalf of the people of Illinois, even as he faced unimaginable personal tragedy. May his courage and selflessness in the face of adversity serve as inspiration to all. I extend my deepest condolences to Jim’s beloved wife Marie and their children, and those fortunate enough to call him a friend.”
