DECATUR, Ill. – One person is dead, and two police officers are injured in Decatur following a police-involved shooting early Wednesday morning.
Decatur Police say it happened just before 12:30 a.m. on a street in the central part of the city. Police say officers, including one Macon County Sheriffs Deputy, tried to get the driver to leave his vehicle during a traffic stop, but when officers attempted to remove him, he produced a handgun and fired multiple shots at close range, causing four officers to shoot back.
One officer was hit once, another multiple times.
The driver was pronounced dead at a hospital, while one officer is in stable condition, another is in serious but stable condition.
Illinois State Police is now conducting an investigation — one police say they pledge their full support to.
