UPDATE: 6:07 p.m.
PEORIA, Ill. –Peoria Police say a woman was shot inside a vehicle with four children sitting nearby this (Thursday) afternoon in what initially appears to be a collateral damage incident.
It’s unclear if the victim was actually targeted in this shooting.
PPD says officers were called to an area of West Smith Street and South McAurthur Highway shortly after 5 p.m. for a ShotSpotter alert of 20 rounds fired.
Police reportedly arrived to find the female victim shot and seriously wounded.
Four juveniles who were also inside the car were unhurt.
“I can imagine the trauma of these children to see somebody in the vehicle as an adult shot, and hearing that, and the glass breaking in the vehicle. No child should have to see this, deal with this. It’s an unfortunate circumstance,” Echevarria told 25 News.
Police have not released suspect information nor announced any arrests, but an investigation is ongoing.
