PEORIA, Ill. — It’s been a topic at Peoria council for weeks, how will the city regulate cannabis dispensaries moving forward?
The city wants to hear from people, and Wednesday night was the first opportunity for that.
According to 25 News, not a single council member attended Wednesday night’s meeting and only four people showed up.
The city has two dispensaries right now with a third application pending.
The third application will be presented to council after they come up with new policies.
Right now, there is no limit on the number of dispensaries, which is what Peoria City Council wants to get input on at these meetings.
One city staffer did ask a few questions during a presentation Wednesday night, but only one person offered an opinion.
“I was hoping the city council would be here to actually hear the statement, but they’re not.”
“We should make ‘cannabis industry’ play in Peoria. As a member of the racial justice and equity commission I believe we have an obligation to make good on what the war on drugs has done to the most vulnerable in our community. But creating more barriers to entry for entrepreneurs is not how we accomplish that”, said Donny Henry with the Libertarian Party of Peoria County.
Peoria cannot disclose how much it receives in tax revenue, because one company owns both locations.
There are still two more opportunities for people to give input through zoom Thursday evening and in-person next week.
