SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Illinois State Treasurer Mike Frerichs — just elected to another term Tuesday — is already back to work, and on this Veterans Day, his efforts to return unclaimed property continues.
Specifically, Frerichs wants to return eleven Purple Hearts now in his office after being left in old safe deposit boxes.
But if history is any indication, they’ll be hard to return.
“It is difficult because there is no national database of Purple Heart recipients,” said Frerichs. “Sometimes these medals aren’t even put into the rightful owner’s box; they’re left with a relative. They don’t have names engraved on them, and they don’t say which conflict they were earned in.”
Frerichs says you can go to his office’s website to find a list of names associated with each Purple Heart.
One was once left in a bank in Peoria, and another was in Pekin.
