PEORIA, Ill. — Central Illinois has received its first measurable snow, with around an inch accumulation expected Tuesday.
Despite treatment, some roads, ramps and overpasses may be slick or slushy.
Several accidents, including a roll-over on Main Street and Elmwood Avenue near Bradley University, have been reported in Peoria.
Peoria Public Works’ Nick McMillion says the City’s Snow Fighters have been out salting the main routes since about 2 a.m. Tuesday.
“We’ve just been going through and keeping them open, keeping them salted. With the snowfall, through this morning commute time, we’re really encouraging people to slow down and use caution, because ultimately there will be slick spots, shaded areas, especially on hills and overpasses,” McMillion says.
Peoria’s crews will continue salting the main roads, and if needed, will repeat treatment ahead of the afternoon commute home.
Forecasters said snowfall would remain mostly light through the remainder of the morning hours, impacting an area along and west of the I-55 corridor.
A Winter Weather Advisory from the National Weather Service will remain in effect until noon Tuesday.
According to NWS meteorologists, additional chances for light snow are possible Wednesday and Thursday.
They say an “unseasonably cold” weather pattern will stay in place through at least next weekend with the coldest air expected late this week into the weekend when wind chills could reach the single digits.
