LEXINGTON, Ill. –Illinois State University officials are announcing there were no injuries to people or animals in a massive blaze as ISU’s Farm in Lexington.
Flames somehow sparked inside the sprawling cattle facility in the pre-dawn hours around 12:40 a.m. Friday, heavily damaging one of the structures on site.
According to posts on social media, as many as a dozen fire departments as well as county, state, local, and University officials all helped contain and monitor the smoldering blaze through the day Friday.
It is expected the fire may burn there at the site through part of this weekend as well.
Lexington Fire officials say the cows inside the massive barn had the ability to escape and get outdoors from the I-55 side of the building.
Credit is being given to farm Manager Jason Lindbom for “heroically” rescuing the cows.
The State Fire Marshal is beginning an investigation into what caused the fire now.
