PEORIA, Ill. — The Peoria Park District vowed to listen to the people before voting on a proposed project at Donovan Park, and Wednesday night that’s what they did.
The board unanimously voted against moving forward with the proposal to create an indoor-outdoor arts venue on 18 acres of current green space.
Supporters of the plan suggested it could bring in thousands of dollars to the local economy and provide another space for entertainment.
But, many people and groups were against the idea, favoring the green space for exercise and activities.
“There was an obvious lack of community support, hundreds of people signed a position in opposition and the outcome shows that the majority of tax payers believe the land value at Donovan park is greater as natural area than commercial development,” said David Pittman, of Friends of Open Space – Donovan Park..
Pittman also told 25 News that he felt there was a lack of business plan presented to support such a project at Donovan Park.
