SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Illinois State Police and local law enforcement are continuing their holiday campaign against drunk driving now through January 2.
Illinois Department of Transportation Spokesperson Paul Wappel says drivers should expect to see more police on the roads, looking for speeders, distracted driver, those not wearing a seatbelt and especially drunk drivers.
Wappel says there are many options for getting home safely after drinking.
“Designate a family member or friend, call a ride-sharing service, plan ahead, think ahead. It’s important, you might save your life or the life of somebody else as well,” Wappel says.
I-DOT says last year, 275 people died in drunk driving related crashes on Illinois roads. That’s an increase of 50 fatalities over 2020.
“We always want the goal to be zero (deaths), so don’t drive drunk or impared,” Wappel says.
