PEORIA, Ill. — Peoria Police are asking those celebrating New Year’s Eve to plan ahead so they can make it home in one piece.
Before the countdown, PPD suggests making a plan with your fellow partygoers – to know who’s drinking, and to have a sober designated driver.
Peoria Police also suggest using ride shares, taxis and other methods to keep drunk drivers off the road.
Even if it’s the first offense, a DUI can cost you thousands in legal bills and your driver’s license for at least one year.
“I will remind people: act like adults and be smart… and be safe about it,” Peoria Police Chief Eric Echevarria tells 25 News. “You’re not only hurting yourself. There are pedestrians out there, other vehicles out there, we want everybody to have a safe holiday.”
Echevarria says officers will be out in full force over the weekend to catch drunk drivers and other offenders.
