PEKIN, Ill. – People in Tazewell County can now send a text message to 911 in the event of an emergency.
The Tazewell County Emergency Telephone System Board says the capability took effect with the new year, and both residents and visitors can use it when they’re in the county.
County officials say in a news release it’s an example of the county expanding technology to better serve their communities.
If you text 911 in the county and they can’t connect with someone in the dispatch center, officials say you’ll get a message telling you to call 911 — which they say is still the preferred method of communication.
Peoria County residents also have the capability to text 911 if needed.
