PEORIA, Ill. — A Peoria City Council member on Tuesday said he’s working to keep his promise of working on a solution to better protect local renters.
District 3 Council member Tim Riggenbach’s comments follows the notices for renters to vacate about 50 homes in Peoria’s East Bluff after the parent company of Darwin Homes, SFR3, bought dozens of properties.
The tenants were originally given 30 days to leave, but that was later extended another 30 days.
Riggenbach said he collected ideas to protect renters at a town hall meeting last week. He said there continues to be a lot of misinformation circulating in the community.
“I would ask to have a presentation prepared for the second meeting of February, as I said, on these issues. We want to make sure folks know we are being as proactive as we can,” said Riggenbach at Tuesday night’s council meeting.
According to 25 News, the tenants must be out of their current homes by the end of this month after getting notices just before Thanksgiving.
Meantime, council members without debate gave their approval to another recreational marijuana shop.
The council agreed to a special use permit for Exxotic Strains, LLC to open a dispensary near Glen and University at the Crossroads Shopping Center.
The issue was on the council’s consent agenda, and there was no discussion.
