PEORIA, Ill. – An Illinois appellate court is siding with a Peoria woman’s request for a new trial on murder charges.
The Third District Appellate court ruled Thursday Sheyanah Lee, 35, should get the new trial she wants.
Lee claimed ineffective counsel led to her being convicted of the 2018 stabbing death of Markesha Jeffries.
The stabbing occurred during a fight November 27, 2018 — a stabbing Lee admitted to, and apologized for when she was sentenced to 50 years in prison. She also claimed the stabbing was in self-defense.
Part of the reason Lee asked for a new trial, documents state, is that her attorney didn’t object to police body camera footage being entered into evidence.
