LINCOLN, Ill. – A winter storm is coming, but the biggest impacts might not be in Peoria.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Ed Shimon in Lincoln says the Peoria area could receive around four inches of snow during the day Wednesday.
“East of the Illinois River, (storm totals are) in the solid three-to-five inch range. You’re seeing six inches in Bloomington. In general, three to four (inches), maybe some fives out west,” said Shimon, on a virtual conference call Monday afternoon.
The worst of the snow, Shimon says, will be farther to the east and south of Peoria, with heavier snow totals, and Winter Storm Watches and Warnings already in effect.
“The snow is going to be coming in overnight Tuesday night,” said Shimon. “After midnight is really when we start to see the snow, and potentially a little bit of a mix at the beginning of that, moving in to our southwest and southern counties, kind of on a band from Springfield to Effingham, then lifting northeast.”
Shimon says some of the snow that hits here may not stay around long before starting to melt because of temperatures. But if any does stay, it will be heavy, wet, and difficult to shovel.
