SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Illinois Senate Republicans are hoping to stave off any renewed attempts to pass a progressive income tax.
There’s been talk of trying again to pass a new tax structure, after it was nixed by Illinois voters in 2020. But, Senator Neil Anderson of Andalusia says this is not an effort that should be revived.
“Why are we here considering even talking about another tax on Illinois families? They’ve already spoken, they don’t trust Springfield with their tax dollars, and they shouldn’t,” Anderson says.
Supporters of a graduated income tax say most people won’t pay more, but opponents say this is another tax increase that will push businesses to leave Illinois.
The State Senate GOP is introducing a resolution opposing the tax.
Gov. J-B Pritzker was recently asked about the issue, he says pursuing a graduated income tax again is not on his radar.
