UPDATED 12:05 P.M.
PEORIA, Ill. — Peoria firefighters were called around 9:45 p.m. Monday to a fire near the corner of NE Monroe and Morgan Streets.
Crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from a two-story building, with fire extending into a two-story apartment building next door.
Peoria Fire Battalion Chief Tom Stimeling said two explosions occurred, sending firefighters into defensive mode.
Due to the size of the fire, and two buildings involved, a 2-11 call alarm response was initiated.
A search of the apartment building found all six occupants had gotten out safely before crews arrived. No one was inside the building where the fire began.
Due to extensive damage, both structures have been demolished. The Red Cross was called to the scene to assist with temporary housing needs.
Peoria Fire Chief Shawn Sollberger tells 25 News the fire is currently being investigated as a “suspected arson.” Damage was estimated at $250,000.
No injuries were reported at the scene.
