SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – A new warning label could soon be placed on gas stoves sold in Illinois.
A bill going through the General Assembly would require the label to warn consumers about potential respiratory risks associated with gas stove emissions, such as asthma.
The bill is being sponsored by Representative Anne Stava-Murray (D-Downers Grove), who says it’s about letting people know all the facts.
“It does not ban gas stoves. It does not prevent anyone from purchasing a gas stove. It does not require existing gas stoves to be modified or removed,” Stava-Murray said. “What we want is for Illinois consumers to be better empowered to make informed choices.”
Some of the pollutants the label would warn about include nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide.
If the bill is passed and signed into law, the requirements would take effect next year.
