You probably had one and didn’t know you couldn’t — until now.
After the Illinois Supreme Court established a rule regarding the use of portable electronic devices in court facilities, 10th Judicial Circuit Chief Judge Katherine Gorman says you can now take such devices into courts here.
That includes smart phones, tablets, computers, smartwatches, and e-books.
But, Gorman says in the order, the devices must be on “silent”, and can only be used in common areas.
However, with the exception of those of us in the media and if we got permission ahead of time, you still can’t take pictures or make audio or video recordings inside courtrooms.
“Electronic devices such as cell phones and tablets have become essential tools today, and the Courts must adapt to the times. Many of these devices are used by self-represented litigants in their cases, and they have become more vital for presenting evidence,” said Chief Judge Katherine Gorman, in a news release.
The 10th Judicial Circuit Covers Peoria, Tazewell, Marshall, Putnam, and Stark Counties. The new policy takes effect immediately.
