OTTAWA, Ill. – An Illinois appellate court says a judge in 2019 properly took into account all the appropriate factors in sentencing a 14-year-old to 45 years in prison after he was convicted of First-Degree Murder and Possession of a Firearm.
That was a ruling filed Monday in the appeal of now-18-year-old Zaveon Marks by the Third District Appellate Court.
He shot and killed Zarious Fair, 16, in June of 2019 on East Frye Street in Peoria. The conviction came several months later.
Marks’ appeal claimed everything from ineffective counsel, to a biased juror being allowed to serve — and that the court erred in allowing him to be tried as an adult.
